The Beauty Inside Antique Clocks – Look, No Batteries
Antique clocks are a marvel of craftsmanship and display the skill of a past age. If you are any kind of antique collector, or merely enjoy antiques now and again, there is a lot to appreciate about clocks of all kinds that were made before batteries became standard inclusions. There are many types of antique clocks including the popular grandfather clock, however, increasingly due to the loss of clock maintenance skills as a generation passes into retirement antique clock collectors are struggling to maintain their collections in good working order.
The essence of the inside of an antique clock is an intricate machinery of tiny moving parts. Compare this to the modern clock – particularly digital varieties – that run via batteries and computer chips. You still find a lot of new watches being made with numerous moving parts, but these are now limited to the highest end of the price range and are very exclusive. Mass production techniques has simply made watch and clock making redundant in our modern society.
Technological advancement is a good thing. Without it we would struggle to enjoy all of the benefits of having numerous clocks and watches in our lives. I mean, where would we be without that digital clock on our microwave? It would be far to inconvenient to have to rely on watchmakers and expert repairers to fix our timepieces every time they played up. Much better to just change a battery or buy a new one for a few dollars and be back in time again.
I’ve been collecting antiques for years and received that passion in part from my father who was a watchmaker. It was my father in fact who first introduced me to the inside of an old grandfather clock and explained to me how the cogs, pins and pendulums kept perfect time without power. I was impressed then and have been impressed since as I have had the opportunity to venture inside numerous antique clocks and watches. It makes me appreciate the skill of past generations.
Anyone can find an opportunity to gaze back at history through antiques. There are literally antique stores everywhere in the world and the internet is the perfect place to learn more if your town happens to be one of the five places on the planet without an antique shop. Looking inside antique clocks is one way to appreciate the past and understand how wonderful the present is and the future might be.
